Oak Hill Cemetery

Oak Hill Cemetery is one of the great examples of the garden cemetery movement of the early to mid 19th century. This cemetery's style derives directly from Romantic landscape paintings by such artists as Claude Lorraine whose idealized pastoral scenes influenced generations of landscape architects. There is evidence, but no proof, that the most recognized proponent of this style in America, A. J. Downing, worked on the cemetery's design.

This style is ideal for the dramatic hills and dales of Oak Hill. The curved, sloping paths lead to intimate views that work perfectly for viewing the sculptural monuments and mausoleums. Recent renovations have made new interments possible for the first time in over a hundred years.
