Standard Form Contracts for Professional Services

Good contractual arrangements are an essential component of a sound professional practice. A clear and complete contract creates a mutual understanding of expectations.

ASLA Standard Form Contracts are a business tool developed to meet the needs of the profession by incorporating up-to-date critical elements of instruments of service. Contracts are tailored for landscape architecture professionals and the clients they serve.

The standard contracts package contains:

  • Three standard contract forms:
    • Landscape Architect and Client Standard Form Agreement
    • Landscape Architect and Client Short Form Agreement
    • Landscape Architect and Consultant Agreement

  • Brief guidelines describing the contracts’ basic provisions and the attendant risks of particular clauses.*

The three contracts and corresponding guidelines are sold as an electronic package and licensed annually on a graduated fee scale, based on the purchasing firm’s size.

To purchase, log in to ASLA's Online Store.

* Although professional liability insurers and experienced legal counsel have reviewed the package, ASLA recommends landscape architecture professionals seek legal and insurance review for specifics on their location and services.

A note on the file format:

The contract documents are provided as locked PDFs only. There are fillable fields where you may enter the project information. In most cases, these are text boxes; elsewhere, there are checkboxes and dropdowns to select certain items. Those who purchase the contracts cannot edit the PDF itself – you may only add text in the fillable sections.

In cases where certain language used, or entire paragraphs or sections, do not apply, you would need to print the form, cross out that section, and then initial it or otherwise indicate that you are taking responsibility for that change.

If the changes required are more extensive, the ASLA Standard Contracts can be used as a model only, though you would need to create a new document from scratch, and ASLA’s liability would not cover this new document. When a firm wants to customize their documents (add their logo, adjust the language used, change the formatting, etc.), they often opt for the “Draft” version of the contracts and guidelines (same locked PDFs, just without the fillable fields and with a “DRAFT” watermark on each page), which are available for reference for $25.
