The rose garden is sunken below street level so that visitors in the garden are less aware of the city around them. Large axial walkways extend in each direction from the fountain in the center of the rose garden.

The original bandstand sits proudly above the rose garden. The structure serves as a focal point for both the garden and the community center.

Built in 1913 in the Italianate style, the community center was the first built by the Portland parks system. The structure is on axis with the fountain and bandstand, and provides the visual end to the opposite side of the park. The community center and pool are still vitally important amenities to the neighborhood.
