Restoring Elba's Pea River Through Dam Revitalization
Elba, Alabama, United States

Faculty Advisors:

Auburn University
The revitalization of the Elba Dam honors the site’s historic structures, preserving them as living reminders of the role they played in powering the local communities of Elba, Troy, and Dothan until the dam’s decommissioning in 2015.This project seeks to transform the overgrown inaccessible hydroelectric dam into an engaging, accessible space that immerses viewers in a landscape reminiscent of past technological achievements. The design proposes for the removal of the dam to enhance environmental protection and bolster community resilience. Removing the spillway projects a 29% increase in access to critical habitat types utilized by threatened and endangered fish and mussel species, while also mitigating future flood risks in Elba.

The Siaya Eco-Park combines recreational spaces, sustainable agriculture, mixed-use affordable housing, and commercial amenities, to create a dynamic hub for community interaction and sustainable living within the heart of the city. The project seeks to integrate existing amenities, like the sports stadium currently under construction, with new affordable housing, to create a mixed-use district that not only stimulates economic growth and offers recreational opportunities, but also promotes environmental stewardship. By encouraging resilient water management practices, providing renewable energy, increasing canopy cover, and integrating various scales of agriculture, the project is a model for ecological urbanism in Siaya and beyond.

During the Vietnam War, extensive spraying of Agent Orange as a biological weapon left residues in the water sources and soil of southern Vietnam. These residues persist in the environment and severely affect biological reproduction, ecological balance and industrial operations. The project is located in the most contaminated border and air base areas. It aims to build a remediation corridor based on the characteristics of the pollutants, using strategies such as dilution, vegetation remediation and UV degradation. At the same time, new use plans for the rehabilitated land are planned, with the aim of restoring and redesigning the natural and living environment of the border and urban areas.

Textile Landscapes: The Material Future of Tulare Lake
Corcoran, California, United States
Anna Avdalyan, Associate ASLA;
Faculty Advisors:
Alison Hirsch;
University of Southern California
The project investigates the material characteristics of cotton, a key non-food crop with historical significance in the Tulare Lake basin. It addresses environmental imbalances caused by conventional farming and unsustainable water management and seeks sustainable approaches to restore the lake's ecosystem by focusing on material considerations and advocating for a material ecology approach.
By examining cotton's secondary cellulose and its potential as a biocomposite filler, the proposed methodology reimagines the future of fibers and the ecological framework of cotton cultivation and water management. "Textile Landscapes" offers a comprehensive strategy for environmental stewardship at both the landscape and material levels.

Seattle's abundant waterways and shorelines create unique spaces where human experience and nature thrive together. This project delves into the Seattle Street End project, highlighting its potential to enhance community access to the water. With 142 street end parks scattered around Seattle, this guide provides a tour of these waterways, encouraging residents and visitors to explore the pocket parks throughout the city. The project concludes with a kit of parts to inspire designers to envision new possibilities where streets meet the sea. It aims to encourage readers to discover social leftovers in their own city and foster a growing interest in the activation of public space.

The catastrophic earthquakes that struck Türkiye and Syria in February 2023 served as a stark reminder of the devastating power of natural disasters and the profound impacts they may have on human settlements. With a combined of 7.8 and 7.6 Richter, these twin earthquakes unleashed a trail of destruction that left a mark on the region for years to come. The death toll surpassed 59,000, with countless more injured and displaced. Cities especially Gaziantep were reduced to rubble, their infrastructure shattered, and their communities deeply scarred. Amidst the despair, lies an opportunity to rebuild Gaziantep in a way that is not only resilient to future disasters but also fosters a more sustainable and equitable future for its citizens.

Students from landscape architecture program collaborated with local communities, NGOs, volunteers, and local government agencies to build eight urban gardens within one year after the Covid-19 pandemic. These gardens provide a platform for residents to participate and engage, promoting interaction among neighbors and thereby enhancing community cohesion. The community activities increased physical activity, yielding positive benefits on both physical and mental health. This project explored a novel mechanism for universities to support local communities with design expertise and solicited more self-initiated co-creation and co-construction. We believe that landscape architectureshould make society more caring, compassionate, and friendly.
