The National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) has released a newly revised edition of its Urban Bikeway Design Guide for the first time in a decade. This updated guide expands beyond individual bike lanes to focus on creating complete, connected bike networks in cities.

Endorsed by the U.S. Department of Transportation, the guide has been instrumental in mainstreaming protected bike lanes across North America. The latest edition includes updated technical guidance, policies, and best practices to enhance safety and accessibility for all bikeway users, including those on e-bikes and scooters. It also emphasizes equity and engagement with historically marginalized communities to ensure fair access to transportation.

For landscape architects, the guide provides essential strategies for integrating bikeways into urban environments in a way that enhances both functionality and aesthetics. It offers insights into designing green infrastructure, improving streetscapes, and creating bike-friendly public spaces that support sustainability and urban resilience. With its focus on network planning, community engagement, and long-term maintenance, the guide helps landscape architects design streets that balance mobility, safety, and ecological benefits while contributing to vibrant, people-centered cities.
