Back-to-School Resources for K-12 classroom engagement

School is starting all across the country, and as part of ASLA’s work to inspire the next generation of landscape architects, we are encouraging members to engage with your local schools. A variety of Career Discovery resources are available to help jump start your next classroom activity.

  • The Big Idea! kid’s sing-along-song by Billy Jonas is now available for download. The upbeat recording features elementary school-aged children singing, playing instruments, and having fun. The lyrics describe the process of a landscape architecture project and invites students to be collaborators. Check out the song, music video, and a look behind the scenes. The Big Idea! is a perfect way to begin a conversation or transition into a hands-on activity at your next school visit.
  • Activity Book for Kids - Take a journey across an imaginary town to learn about the building blocks of landscape architecture. In this activity book, young students will learn about landscape architecture, see sketches from landscape architecture professionals, and have the opportunity to sketch and color drawings. This book is geared towards readers 9-12 years old.
  • Activity Books for Teens - Take a journey across the United States to see some of the great places designed by landscape architects. In this activity book, you will learn about landscape architecture, see sketches from landscape architecture professionals, have the opportunity to sketch and color drawings, and problem solve to plan your own projects.
  • STEM Literacy by Design - Intended for elementary school girls, STEM Literacy by Design encourages young girls to explore landscape architecture using fun, poetic, and colorful stories about adventurous girls who find their passion, courage, and "girl power" in the great outdoors.
  • And if you know any teachers who might be interested in applying for our educators workshop in 2025 please share this news with them: National Endowment for the Humanities Awards Grant to the ASLA Fund for Educator Workshop.
