The Olmsted Network is heading to the Heartland! Join us in the Olmsted-rich state of Wisconsin on September 20-22 for our upcoming annual conference— The Olmsteds in Wisconsin. We’ll celebrate the area’s Olmsted history and the exciting revitalization efforts underway in these landscapes.

The conference opens in Washington Park, where Olmsted Way was dedicated last year and community support is steadily growing. We’ll hear from local professors, politicians, historians and preservationists in addition to the “boots on the ground” volunteers that are bringing this park back to life. And, of course, we can’t visit the park without taking a tour! We’ll spend the afternoon exploring Washington Park and its surroundings.

On Thursday, September 21, we’ll visit Lake Park for another round of expert presentations. One panels— Embracing Our History: Success Stories of Historic Parks— will feature park leaders and advocates from across the Midwest and Northeast. Later in the day, we’ll tour not only Lake Park but Newberry Boulevard and Riverside as well. We’ll finish the night off with a very special dinner at the Grohmann Museum, where the Olmsted Network will present our annual awards to Olmsted champions and advocates.

The final conference day consists of a trip to nearby Lake Geneva, where Yerkes Future Foundation will guide us through Yerkes Observatory— home of astrophysics— and its incredible John Charles Olmsted grounds. We’ll hear about the Olmsted Brothers in Chicago and then talk to landscape architects and ecologists about the horticultural challenges of historic landscapes. At the end of the day, we’ll wrap up the conference with an optional tour and tasting at Lakefront Brewery. After all, we can’t visit Milwaukee without sampling the local beverage!

Registration is open until September 6. Students are welcome to attend free-of-charge with proof of student email or ID. Learn more about the conference and additional events here.
