Along the Harborwalk, the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital has relocated to a new facility in the Charlestown Navy Yard. Copley Wolff Design Group’s landscape design includes spaces surrounding the building, as well as a green roof, and integration with the Boston Harbor Walk.

Along the water’s edge, a physical therapy trail incorporates the use of environmentally friendly building materials and low-maintenance plant groups. This trail is designed for patients to practice a variety of real world challenges within a safe and controlled environment.

The primary trail is a relatively level, six-foot-wide concrete walkway with staggered stainless-steel handrails. As the path continues, it begins to undulate and patients encounter increased slopes, requiring greater skill and stamina to traverse.

Secondary paths are located off the main trail. These provide a safe environment for individuals to train and further test their recovery on a variety of walking surfaces they will encounter outside the hospital setting. Interactive, spinning rock elements have been incorporated along the trail for upper body conditioning and tactile, sensory opportunities.
