WHY: The Gala Celebrations sponsored by the American Society of Landscape Architects will be the grand closing for National Landscape Architecture Week. National Landscape Architecture Week, April 20-28, 2002, celebrates the legacy of the landscape architecture profession and the role of landscape architects in creating the special places in which we live, work, and play. Throughout the week, landscape architects, ASLA chapters, and partner organizations have participated in a variety of national and local programs - including community environmental projects, student design competitions, and a Congressional Lobby Day - to increase public awareness of and appreciation for the profession and its work. As a grand finale to the 2002 National Landscape Architecture Week, the American Society of Landscape Architects is hosting the two gala events on Saturday, April 27. Members of the press are invited to be our quest at the ASLA Professional Design Awards ceremony, April 27, at 3 p.m. in the Reagan Building Amphitheater. This annual event honors beautiful, thoughtful, and environmentally conscious works of landscape architecture. Winning projects include President Jimmy Carter's Boyhood Farm in Plains, Ga.; the Oklahoma City National Memorial; the Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Ore.; and the Los Angeles Civic Center.
