Democrats Sweep White House, Congress and Senate
ASLA Government Affairs
2008-11-05

Senator Barack Obama of Illinois was announced as the 44th President of the United States yesterday, claiming a wide-margin Electoral College victory of 364-163, with Missouri not yet reporting. President-Elect Obama managed to hang on to key states such as Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia and Florida to secure his victory over Senator John McCain of Arizona.

Democrats also picked up 18 seats in the Senate, giving them a 57-40 lead. At this point, the Democrats have missed their opportunity at a 60-seat, “filibuster-proof” majority, yet still have a chance at picking up any of the four remaining seats not yet called in the states of Minnesota, Oregon, Alaska, and Georgia. ASLA is pleased to report that Honorary ASLA Member, Mark Udall of Colorado has won a Senate seat after relinquishing his position as Representative of Colorado’s 2nd District. Other supporters of issues important to landscape architects and keeping their Senate seats include Honorary ASLA Member Senator Mary Landrieu (LA) and Senator Tom Harkin (IA).

Additionally, Democrats increased their majority in the House to 254-173 with 8 seats still undecided. Some of the re-elected members who have championed landscape architecture techniques in legislation include: Honorary ASLA Member Allyson Schwartz (PA), Honorary ASLA Member Earl Blumenauer (OR), Michael McCaul (TX), Ed Perlmutter (CO), Doris Matsui (CA), and Raul Grijalva (AZ).

Most exciting for the profession of landscape architecture is the election of Kathy Dahlkemper to Pennsylvania’s Third District. Kathy and her husband Dan Dahlkemper, ASLA, are co-owners of Dahlkemper Landscape Architects & Contractors in Erie, PA. ASLA welcomes Congresswoman-elect Dahlkemper to Congress and looks forward to keeping her and her staff abreast of legislative issues important to the Society and the profession as a whole.
