ASLA has installed SuLin Kotowicz, FASLA, PLA, as its president for the 2023-2024 term. Kotowicz was sworn in as the 79th president and the 13th woman president during the President's Dinner at the ASLA 2023 Conference on Landscape Architecture in Minneapolis. She succeeds Emily O’Mahoney, FASLA.

In her remarks, Kotowicz acknowledged that there’s something very special about ASLA. It’s inspiring, supportive and diverse. “In my experience, and perhaps yours, I’ve truly felt a sense of belonging here at ASLA. I love the many ways we form inclusive, compassionate communities with a culture in which people feel safe, seen, heard, and respected. We’re not homogenous; our differences make us stronger. Bringing new voices to the table with a variety of backgrounds and life experiences makes us stronger.”

She closed the evening emphasizing “the tasks ahead cannot be done by one person alone. I humbly ask each of you for your support in my role, yet also challenge each one of us in growing the profession and supporting an emerging professional or an emerging leader. Let us all imagine together our legacy. There is a purpose for everyone you meet. Some people come into your life to test you, some to teach you, some to use you, and some to bring out the very best in you. Which purpose can you serve for an individual who may be a future landscape architect, future ASLA medal winner, or even a future ASLA President? I’ll be holding this in mind throughout my year of service ahead.”

SuLin received her BLA from Ball State University. She is a licensed landscape architect and has more than 20 years of experience in private practice in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She is a project manager/Senior Landscape Architect with VIRIDIS Design Group, creating inspirational and accessible public spaces in the built environment.
