New Staff Join Mahan Rykiel Associates
Mahan Rykiel Associates, Inc. (MRA), a Baltimore-based landscape architecture, urban design, and planning firm, announced that Mayra Filippone, ASLA, Isaac Hametz, Student ASLA, Joe McGinley, Travis D’Onofrio, and Jennifer Saunier, Associate ASLA, have joined their staff.
Mayra Filippone, ASLA, has worked in the Baltimore area for the past eight years, and brings a wide range of project experience including transportation, master planning, urban design, mixed-use, higher education, and Department of Defense. Prior to graduating from Ball State University in Muncie Indiana, Filippone lived in the Detroit area, where she developed a passion for opportunities to transform unappreciated or neglected spaces into something truly special to serve the community. Filippone is licensed to practice in the states of Maryland and New York.
Isaac Hametz, Student ASLA, holds a master’s degree in landscape architecture from the University of Virginia, School of Architecture and an undergraduate degree in agriculture from the University of Maryland. As a graduate student Isaac was awarded the landscape architecture department’s Benjamin C. Howland Travel Fellowship, as well as an interdisciplinary graduate study fellowship from the religious studies department for his work investigating the cultural construction of space. Before graduate school, Isaac lived in Israel where he founded and operated a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing urban agriculture. At MRA, Isaac will contribute to growing the firm’s design research and social entrepreneurship portfolios.
Joe McGinley, landscape designer, joined Mahan Rykiel Associates with a master’s in landscape architecture from Morgan State University and four years in the field. He brings a rich diversity of experiences, having acquired a bachelor’s in geology from Virginia Tech, a mastery of GIS and spatial analysis tools, and six years of environmental restoration and remediation prior to transitioning to landscape architecture. As a landscape designer, Joe has demonstrated versatility, working on transportation, master planning, urban ecology, mixed-use commercial, as well as education-based projects. He is working towards his professional license.
Travis D’Onofrio is a 2013 graduate from Pennsylvania State University with a degree in landscape architecture where he was awarded for outstanding leadership and service and for exceptional growth in landscape architecture. His interest in urban design and natural processes generate his passion for stormwater management and using reclaimed materials to restore underperforming landscapes. While studying abroad in Rome for a semester, he concentrated on sustainable design strategies, the morphology of a city, and graphic design.
Jennifer Saunier, Associate ASLA, specialized in landscape and graphic design at the Neighborhood Design Center in Columbus, Ohio, embracing underserved neighborhoods and advocating for design as a right, not a privilege. Her work on the Columbus Art Walks received the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) Model Practice Award, 2012. She holds a degree in landscape architecture from the Ohio State University and is the past Buckeye section chair of the Ohio Chapter of ASLA. Drawing inspiration from unusual places and the collaboration of art and architecture in the urban landscape, she pursues designs that promote community building and inspire engagement.
“Securing talent is imperative as we continue to take on more exciting projects and provide a high level of client service,” commented Richard Jones, President of MRA. “These new additions to our firm allow us to continue to grow the practice and expand our design research capabilities.”
