Chestnut Park, the newly renovated pocket park at 1707 Chestnut Street tucked into the heart of Philadelphia’s downtown shopping and business district, has been formally rededicated as John F. Collins Park. |

John Collins, who died in 2011, was the landscape architect who transformed the former parking lot into an urban oasis. Among his many other accomplishments are Three Bears Park in Society Hill as well as that neighborhood’s Greenways, and Schuylkill River Park on the western border of Center City. Collins was also a devoted teacher and a person committed to providing job-training skills to disadvantaged individuals.
At the ceremony, new signage for the park was unveiled that included panels describing Collins’ many contributions to the public places and civic spaces that make Philadelphia a more livable, healthy and vital city.

MSA, P.C. Director of Planning & Landscape Architecture Michael E. Perry, ASLA, has recently joined the Landscape Practices Committee of Lynnhaven River NOW. There are currently nine committees that support the organization, which was formed almost 10 years ago in an effort to restore the Lynnhaven River in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The mission of the Landscape Practices Committee is to advise and educate the public on sustainable landscape practices to improve water quality. They have five primary goals, which include expanding contact with the public to provide education on proper landscape practices and increasing buffer plantings throughout the watershed.
“I look forward to working on the Landscape Practices Committee,” said Mike Perry. “We will provide educational, inspirational, and practical concepts to encourage homeowners to participate in the restoration of the Lynnhaven River.”
