The Women in Military Service for America Memorial is subtly built in front of, on top of, and behind the historic hemicycle, the semicircular stone retaining wall that marks the ceremonial entrance to the Arlington National Cemetery. The hemicycle was designed McKim, Mead & White as part of the Arlington Memorial Bridge project. The original structure for the memorial was never completed and the site had been neglected since its dedication in 1932.

When this location was determined to be the home of the new memorial, the challenge was to not only design a memorial that would honor the women who have served in our nation's defense over the last 200 years but also to restore and preserve the existing structure.
