Emerging Professionals Medal Design Contest - Official Rules

About the Emerging Professional Medal

This inaugural medal, launched earlier this year, seeks to recognize an individual early in their career who has demonstrated exceptional leadership and considerable contributions to the profession of landscape architecture, the prospective recipient’s community, a firm or design team or all of the above.

General

The purpose of the contest is to design a medal for the inaugural ASLA Emerging Professionals Honor. The medal will have a long-lasting impact within the Society, and this design is expected to be used for the foreseeable future. ASLA reserves to right to modify the winning design to ensure it complies with its brand standards.

  • To be eligible, each entrant must be an Emerging Professional, defined as being within the first 10 years of their career and hold a degree from a landscape architecture program recognized by ASLA.
  • Individuals may submit no more than one entry.
  • Submitted designs must be the original work of the entrant and must not include, be based on, or derived from any pre-existing or third party designs, trademarks, or copyrighted images.
  • All design submissions will become the property of ASLA. Specifically, by entering the Contest, each entrant agrees: (i) to assign and transfer to ASLA, its successors and assigns, the entire right, title and interest in and to the submitted design, including all copyright therein and the right to revise and create derivative works; and (ii) to execute and take such further steps as ASLA may deem necessary for it to acquire, transfer, maintain, secure and enforce the copyright in the design submissions.
  • The selected winner MUST submit a scalable vector art version of the winning design as a high-resolution file, along with a 500px/500px JPG.
  • Elements of the design must include the name of the Honor (Emerging Professional Medal) and a design that can be applied to the front of the medal. Your name or any personal branding may not be included in the design.

  • ASLA retains the right to publish the winning design and winner’s name on the ASLA website, in promoting the Emerging Professional Honor, and in other products in conjunction with promoting landscape architecture without further permission or compensation.
How to Enter

To enter the Emerging Professionals Medal Design Contest, eligible participants must:

  • Complete the Official Entry Form
  • Create a medal design that will fit within a 3” circle (if chosen as a winner, you MUST be able to provide a high resolution vector file as an Adobe Illustrator or as an Encapsulated Post Script (EPS) file)
  • Submit your completed Entry Form and design by Friday, July 10, 2020 at 6 p.m. ET.
Selection Criteria

A selection committee will be comprised of three people: two landscape architects and one emerging professional and will evaluate all entries based on the following (though other criteria may be considered):

Relevance

  • Align with the mission of this medal to recognize the exemplary work, advocacy, and leadership which Emerging Professionals are contributing to their communities, the profession, and the Society;
  • Embody the values of the American Society of Landscape Architects; and,
  • Be emblematic of the next generation of leaders.

Originality and Aesthetic Quality

  • Displays visual balance
  • All the elements work together to create a unified and appealing design
  • Exhibits original design, creativity, and imagination

The winner will have the choice to receive one of the following prizes:

One year of post-graduate membership to ASLA, one round-trip ticket to the 2020 ASLA Conference on Landscape Architecture, one full registration for the 2020 Conference on Landscape Architecture in Miami Beach, or two tickets to the Fellow’s Dinner (includes tuxedo or gown rental). The selection committee reserves the right not to select a winner, if in its sole discretion no suitable entries are received.

Other Terms and Conditions

By entering this Contest, entrants accept and agree to be bound by these Official Rules. Any violation of these rules may result in disqualification. All decisions of ASLA regarding this Contest are final and binding in all respects. All entrants must be at least 18 years old as of the date of entry. All federal, state and/or local income and other taxes, if any, are the winner's sole responsibility. No prize or any portion thereof is transferable or redeemable for cash. By entering the Contest, each entrant releases and discharges ASLA, its affiliated entities, and each of their respective officers, directors, members, shareholders, employees, independent contractors, agents, representatives, transferees and assigns, from any and all liability whatsoever in connection with this Contest. Except where prohibited, acceptance of a prize constitutes the consent of any winner, without further compensation, to use the name and likeness of such winner for editorial, advertising and publicity purposes by ASLA or others authorized by ASLA. Entries that are lost, late, misdirected, incorrect, garbled, or incompletely received, for any reason, will not be eligible. ASLA, in its sole discretion, reserves the right to disqualify any person tampering with the entry process or the operation of the website. ASLA further reserves the right to cancel, terminate or modify the Contest if it is not capable of completion as planned, for any reason, including by reason of force majeure or technical failures of any sort.

All issues concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of these Official Rules shall be governed by the laws of the District of Columbia. No purchase or payment of any kind is necessary to enter or win this Contest. ASLA MAKES NO WARRANTIES, REPRESENTATIONS OR GUARANTEES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, IN FACT OR IN LAW, AS REGARDS THIS CONTEST.
