Name of activity: Pocket Parks

Brief description of event: The Iowa State SSLA will be creating Landscape Architectural instillations weekly in the Design Center Atrium.   Each year in the program will create an installation with the first installation rolling out the green turf on Wednesday April 1st turning the Atrium into a temporary park.

Name of activity: Landscape Architecture After School
Date:  April 7th 4:30 p.m.
Location: Meeker Elementary School, Ames IA
Additional sponsors or participating organizations: SSLA & Meeker Elementary School

Brief description of event: The Iowa State SSLA Chapter will be working with students participating in the Meeker Elementary After School Program to create planters for dwarf sunflower seeds while creating a pot out of recycled materials.  The goal is to discuss sustainable practices while informing students about Landscape Architecture.

Name of activity: Landscape Architecture at VIESHEA
Date:  April 18 – 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Location: Iowa State University VIESHEA Village, Central Campus
Additional sponsors or participating organizations: Iowa Chapter ASLA & Design Council

Brief description of event: The Iowa State SSLA chapter will be installing a temporary landscape while informing the public about a wide variety of market sectors, types of practice, the LA program at Iowa State University, influential Landscape Architects, and current practices.  
In addition to the designed landscape, the chapter will be creating plant containers with children and distributing wildflower and dwarf sunflower seed packets with specially designed Landscape Architecture packets displaying information about the profession.

Name of event: Downtown Community Garden workshop

Brief description: We teamed with the City of Des Moines Park and Rec department and a community group to provide free design services for a new community garden located in the downtown of Iowa’s capitol city.  The next steps involve assisting in laying out the garden and working with local industry to implement as many of the design features as possible.

Name of event:Student Society of Landscape Architects park in an atrium project

Brief description: The students society at Iowa State University took turns building a small park in the atrium at the College of Design.  The Iowa Chapter helped procure a bench from Landscape Forms to help furnish these parks.
