ASLA/ACE Mentor Program
Legacy Project
In 2008, ASLA introduced the Legacy Project as a gift to the host city of the annual meeting and EXPO. The host chapter ASLA members team up with the local affiliate of the ACE Mentor Program to design a project using products donated by our generous EXPO exhibitors to be installed after the meeting. Many EXPO exhibitors donate products and plants for the project, allowing ASLA to give back to the city that hosts the meeting.
This year’s ASLA legacy project will upgrade the horticulture program greenhouse and build a courtyard garden at Metro Tech High School in Phoenix. Metro Tech provides vocational training to students from 15 high schools in the Phoenix Union High School District. The ASLA Arizona chapter will work with ACE mentor students and Metro Tech students and faculty to upgrade the facilities with paved spaces, raised planters, benches, and gardens. Our intrepid volunteers are developing the project as a coordinated effort with the schools’ Culinary Department and the Drafting Department, incorporating into the curriculum.
Items that are still needed are a Shade Structure and Outdoor Kitchen Applicances. If you can provide any of these, please contact Karla Hunt, at KHunt@j2design.us. If you don’t see your plants or products listed, offer them anyway. Karla and her fabulous volunteers will try to incorporate them into the design.
